temperatures plunging in the bay area. >> by friday morning you can see them driving on thin ice. they issued a black ice warning for the bay area roads. >> and the cold snap has the potential to freeze foliage in your garden. >> let's start with sand sash sash sandhya patel. >> we will check out live doppler 7hd. a we do have a few showers around the bay area. most of the showers have been skirting the coastline. but i am going to take you in where we are seeing some rain reaching the ground over land. as we show you highway 101 heading up toward ukiah, we are seeing light returns. old stage road and north rock road and we are seeing some showers. as we look around the gilroy area, as we take you to san mar teen, very light showers. so far the rainfall amounteneraa 10th of an inch and ben

low man an 11th of an inch. the you rear caw -- the eureka national weather service is reporting west of ukiah. it has been snow flurries at 3500 feet for at least about a half an hour. you can clearly see it here in the hills just east of ukiah. we are talking about low snow levels, high tide combining with flooding possibility and the coldest air of the season is yet to arrive. i'll show you when you will be freezing coming up in just a few minutes. dan? >> thanks a lot. the national weather service issued a winter weather advisory in the sierra. it lasts through 4:00 a.m. this is cal trans through squaw valley. drivers will be required to put chains on their tires from gold run to truckee. developing news tonight. there are new questions about what may have caused a tanker to crash into the bay bridge? the overseas ramar slammed into a tower of the western span of the bridge on monday morning. the san francisco chronicle is

reporting that investigators are trying to determine if radar-guiding equipment was working during the tanker's passage. a coast guard bull law tin says -- bulletin says there may have been a radar. cal trans says the system was functioning on monday. federal investigators want to know what its status was leading up to this collision. ?ai an east bay mother that has waited 2 tour years -- 24 years will have to wait longer. dna testing on bone fragments prove they are not the remains of makayla garrett, a little girl who vanished two days ago. they say it is a relief to makayla's mother. >> i found out the bone they thought might be makayla's is not makayla's. >> in her living room makayla garrett's mother felt a wave of relief when police broke the news to her on wednesday afternoon. >> all of these months they

have spent conducting these tests i haven't run around saying hurry up, hurry up i want to know the answers. there is a large part of me that is not sure that i could deal with the answers if i were to find out that she has been killed. >> 24 years ago makayla garrett was kidnapped in front of a hayward market as a 9-year-old. she was never found. last winter police developed a potential connection to the speed killer. another parolee who had hung himself may have abducted kayla. they searched an abandoned well in lyndon, california and found human bone fragments. but dna tests revealed they did not match makayla's profile. so now the garrett family is shifting gears again back into hoping like they have been doing for 24 years now. >> missing her, looking for

her, hoping and praying for some answers and perhaps juggling them all at the same time. >> leslie brinkley, abc7 news. we are learning more about the death of a home intruder at the hands of the resident. what first seemed to be a burglary gone bad has turned into what police say was an elaborate conspiracy by an estranged wife that backfired. alan wang is at the apartment building in pittsburgh tonight where this all went down. alan? >> carolyn, we have pictures of the couple during better times. now four people are under arrest for murder including the man's wife. police say she plotted for two weeks with her boyfriend, and when the time came, it all fell apart. the apartment residents identified the couple as charmain and tyrene. together they have an eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. >> i have always seen him with

his kids, picking up his kids ssments he always had his kids. he was a nice guy. >> sometimes i come home on my break and i would see him, but i never did see her that much. >> police say the wife told the husband she was cheating on him and wanted him out of the house. but he wasn't moving fast enough. >> this angered his wife to the point where she plotted a burglary with her current boyfriend in an effort to scare him and persuade him into actually leaving the residence. >> the plan backfired. police say she gave the housekey to 54-year-old robert lyndsay, a man with an extensive criminal history including burglary. and she convinced him to break in while he was home alone. the neighbor upstairs heard the commotion. jay somebody was getting into a fight or something. >> he stabbed lyndsay in the back of the neck killing him. when police arrived they nabbed two of the accused accomplices who police say con

ease ifed. -- confessed. police arrested the wife and her 22-year-old boyfriend, matt parker, and the two accused accomplices. the boyfriend's 21-year-old brother charles parker and 23-year-old jimmy salgotto, all of pittsburgh. and police say he justifiably killed robert lyndsay. they were not at their apartment tonight and police say they are still interviewing witnesses so we could learn more in the days ahead. n pittsburgh, alan wopping, ab -- alan wang, abc7 news. >> alan, thank you. the man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire in san francisco will appear in court tomorrow. police say dexter oliver doused star lamar with gasoline sunday afternoon. tonight lamar's family got support from anti-domestic violence advocat dozens gathered at glide memorial church for a memorial to bring awareness to domestic

violence. abc news spoke to the victim's mother. >> to be face-to-face with him to hear what i want to say to him why he put me through this? why he put her through this, her kids through this? >> oliver is facing charges of attempted murder and arson. lamar is expected to survive, but of course she will be hospitalized for several months with terrible injuries. a bronze plaque honoring 15 local vietnam war veterans has been stolen. police say the thieves cut the plaque from its base at walnut park in petaluma. the plaque is about 25 inches wide and about 30 inches long. it has been in the park since the mid1970s. local veterans groups say they are mobilizing to raise funds to replace that plaque. we've all heard of guard dogs, but a man in castro valley is accused of using a guard gator to protect his marijuana stash. alameda county sheriff deputies sent out this picture of the five foot long

alligator. it was discovered at the home. officers say they also found 34 pounds of marijuana. they say the suspect used this alligator to deter would be pot thieves. mr. teeth is now at the oakland zoo. >> can you imagine a thief walking in on that. it is one of the worst flu seasons in years. in the bay area have been mild. but way should expect a change. to keep the flu in check here, doctors are urging people to get vaccinated. target started offering free vaccinations at its pharmacies to kids four years of age to 18 years old. flu season in northern california is worse in january and february and doctors say act now to get protected. >> it usually takes a couple of weeks for your immune system to be responding to that vaccination and building up the antibody levels in a way that is enough to protect against influenza. better.the s.

another problem for boeing 787 dreamliner. as you said, it is set to make its inaugural flight in san jose on friday. they are doing the flight from san jose to tokyo. it is the latest airline to have problems with the new dreamliner. a string of problems for boeing's new 787 dreamliner. a flight was canceled in japan because of an error message that incorrectly indicated a brake problem. tuesday a japan airline dreamliner splashed 40 gallons of jet fuel off its wing on to a logan international runway in boston just before takeoff. another pilot spotted the leak. >> that's japan air. i don't know if they know. it but they have fuel or something spilling off the out board wing there, quite a bit. >> and again in boston on monday, a different japan airliner experienced a fire. they said they have extram confidence in the dreamliner. former pilot and safety

informant has confidence in the plane. >> we certainly can't blame the airplane for a battery. you are 2ing to say who manufactured that battery? >> and he has seen fuel leaks off the wing before. he doesn't have the data from this week's insurancent did, but it can -- incident, but it can happen if the plane is over fueled for a long flight and the pilot makes a sharp the. turn on the runway. >> i see nothing in the events that are common or you would say is a serious event and that's what is important. >> with new planes it just out theme bugs. >> i would have no problem getting on that airplane, flying it or riding anywhere on it. >> and i talked to a spokesperson, and they said that after the battery fire in boston, they checked all 17 of their dreamliners and found no the computer system in the dreamliner that gave the error message regarding the brakes. abc7 news.

you. light showers around sea ranch and anapolis road. very light returns. we are seeing a little moisture as well. some has been turning into mixed precipitation. as you noticed it is indicated by the pink. it is northeast of sea ranch around the eastern portion of ukiah. we have been seeing some snow developing. certainly coming down in the sierra nevada. chain controls remain in place and all routes lead together tahoe area. it has been coming down heavily in truckee. the temperatures are running colder than where they were 24 hours ago. most of the bay area in the 40s. 37 in santa rosa. and here are the highlights. showers into tomorrow. snow level is 1500 to 2,000 feet. and we are going to see freezing cold conditions friday morning. here is a look at the system. the coldest air of the season so far right here. cold front has passed. we are going to be seeing some of the colder air filtering in. we will keep the cold, light showers through thursday.

here is a computer animation. we have the few showers skirting the coast. we will keep in the possibility of a hit or miss shower. 3:00 a.m. you will notice pink showing up around mount hamilton. that is a mix of rain and snow. and that is certainly a possibility later on tomorrow as well. showers at 5:00 a.m. when some of you are heading out the door. make sure you grab your umbrellas. into 9:00 a.m., a few light showers in the south. morgan hill in the hills could see some rain and snow mixing in. in the afternoon, 2:00 or right around north of santa rosa and ukiah, still mixed precipitation and then partly sunny skies for the rest of the bay area. we are already seeing some clearing tonight, but don't be fooled by it. cold air is coming in. light showers will not amount to a lot. 0 to .15 of an inch by thursday evening. as we look here there is a winter weather advisory for the santa lucia mountains and the big sur area and the los pod degrees -- los-padres

mountains. could see up to an inch as low as 1500 feet. the winter weather advisory for the sierra nevada as the snow continues. 5 to seven inches with the gusty winds and chain control continues. just be aware of that. the other thing to be aware of, some of the highest tides of the season combining with a large northwesterly swell. the next two days could see minor coastal flooding as the low-lying areas are inundated by the higher than normal tides and the larger swells. tomorrow morning, bundle up when you head sout the door. it will be -- when you head out the door. mid30s around livermore, concord, and we will see those few showers so you will need those umbrellas in certain spots. freezing cold conditions coming up fri 2: 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the valleys freeze warnings will be going up. and frost advisories so sensitive plants at risk. tomorrow afternoon temperatures mid40s to low 50s. it is going to be a colder day. you will need to bundle up and get out the heavy winter
